Unlike his immediate predecessor, who was plagued by melancholy due to his actions during the Last Great Time War, this incarnation was outgoing, lively and genial, a demeanour that hid the "survivor's guilt" that had plagued him since the war. Late in his life, however, the weight became much more pronounced. If prodded too much, he would erupt in an almost righteous sense of fury.
He was haunted by companions lost, enemies believed long-dead and events that threatened to destroy time itself. He met his end after he absorbed a huge quantity of nuclear radiation, whilst saving the life of his friend and former companion Donna Noble's grandfather, Wilfred Mott, leading to his regeneration into his next incarnation.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Countdown: The Ninth Doctor
The Ninth Doctor was the ninth incarnation of the Time Lord known as the Doctor. Coping with the nightmarish events of the Last Great Time War, he tended to brood and act crossly to those who rubbed him the wrong way. Despite this, he remained jovial and quite friendly towards anyone he took a liking to. Rose Tyler was his most constant companion, although he did share several adventures with Captain Jack Harkness too. Absolutely definitive statements about the origins of the Ninth Doctor were complicated, however, by a lack of knowledge about his precise contributions in the Time War and the circumstances in which he regenerated from his predecessor.
During the Slitheen's attempt to destroy the Earth for profit, he gained temporary allies in Rose's mother Jackie, Rose's ex-boyfriend Mickey and Harriet Jones. He also had a single adventure with Adam Mitchell, an employee of Henry Van Statten, at Rose's request.
He regenerated after he directly absorbed time vortex energy that had converted Rose briefly into the Bad Wolf entity. Although this saved her, it caused massive damage to the Ninth Doctor's body at a cellular level.

Its Been a While...
Wow, I can't believe I haven't posted anything since September! I did plan to keep posting once I started uni again, but obviously that didn't happen. I didn't anticipate quite how much work I would have in the second year of my animation degree. So, what does this mean for my blog?
Well, I am going to post as much as I can, when I can. This year I have new lessons like character development, innovative animation and creative compositing. I'm really enjoying my new lessons, even though it's a lot more work. For example innovative animation is the most time consuming, but I don't care because I get to explore a different animator's work each week! Creative compositing is great, I get to work with green screen for the first time and try my hand at stop motion again. But, I have to say my favourite lesson for this semester is character development. I finally get to flesh out one of my many characters that have been walking round my head for the past few years, but more on them later…
I'll be telling you more about what I've been up to, but first let me introduce you to Doctors 9 and 10.

You Can Tell...
That I haven't drawn anything for three weeks!
Whilst I was at uni sorting out my life, I did manage to show my lecturer all of my sketches since July. She told me she could tell that I had improved since finishing my first year. But I should focus more on the human body and face, she particularly liked my sketches of Buffy and Willow. So from now on every day I will be drawing a character from one of my favourite TV shows or movies. And I will be starting with Buffy the Vampire Slayer…
This is Xander Harris, a member of the famous scoobies. Sorry my sketch doesn't really look much like him, there are two reasons for this. Firstly I can't draw men. I love to draw women because they have curves, but when it comes to men it seems like they're full of straight lines (if you know what I mean). Secondly, I haven't drawn anything for three weeks, so I've only got myself to blame! I'm not going to moan about everything I don't like about my sketch, but there is one thing that really bugs me. The shadow on his neck, it looks like a shitty beard. Oh well, onto the next one.

Back For Good! (I Mean It This Time)
Wow, can't believe I haven't posted anything in three weeks! But I do have a good reason, I've been sorting out my uni life. I wasn't sure if I would be able to continue on my animation course, but I'm glad to say everything is now sorted and I will be back at uni next week!
As this is my first post in three weeks, I wanted to talk about a certain show that will be celebrating it's 50th Anniversary later this year. That show (if you haven't guessed) is of course Doctor Who.
Firstly details were released about what will be happening across the BBC to celebrate Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary:
Now seeing the way the BBC are going to be celebrating Doctor Who's 50th, it makes me wish November would hurry up and get here! But I am slightly disappointed at the length of the anniversary episode, I mean I think it should be at least 90 minutes.
Next came a rather epic looking poster for 'The Day of the Doctor':
I love this poster so much. It is the first in (hopefully) a number of posters for the special, but as ever I do have a slight problem with it. Bad Wolf. Why is it back, I thought that whole storyline was done? I hope it doesn't play a major part in the anniversary story, because to me it would feel like a celebration of 8 years rather than 50.
I think I'll finish with a theory I heard on Facebook. The theory is that the 50th Anniversary story is actually a three parter. This is based on the title of the latest episodes: 'Name of the Doctor' and 'Day of the Doctor'. They both end with 'of the Doctor', so a lot of people think the Christmas episode title will be '___ of the Doctor'. If this happens it would be a very clever move by the mighty Moff (Steven Moffat)!
Even though it doesn't sound like it, I am looking forward to Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary and I hope you are too!

BBC One
'The Day of the Doctor' - the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who. Starring Matt Smith, David Tennant, Jenna Louise Coleman with Billie Piper and John Hurt, this special will be feature length - a whole 75 minutes of adventure on 23rd November.
BBC Two
In a special one-off programme, Professor Brian Cox will try to answer the classic questions raised by the Doctor - can you really travel in time? Does extra-terrestrial life exist in our galaxy? And how do you build something as fantastical as the TARDIS?
The Culture Show will present 'Me, You and Doctor Who' with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural artefacts of modern Britain.
BBC Two will then wrap up its coverage with the previously announced 'An Adventure in Space and Time' written by Mark Gatiss.
BBC Three
'Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend' will countdown to the top Doctor Who monster as voted for by you.
'Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide' will introduce those less familiar to the show to a wealth of archive material and act as a guide to all things Who.
We also have one further exciting commission to be announced later this year which will see the celebrations finish with a bang.
BBC Four
Audiences will be introduced to the First Doctor, William Hartnell, with a special re-run of the first ever story, which marked the start of 50 years of history. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.
There will also be programmes across CBBC including two live Blue Peter specials.
BBC Radio 1
A documentary will look at 'Time Lord Rock (TROCK)' as a genre of music inspired by the Doctor and his journeys through space and time.
BBC Radio 2
'Who is the Doctor' will look at the lasting appeal of Doctor Who and ask how much of its continued success can be attributed to its basic formula.
In 'The Blagger's Guide to Doctor Who', David Quantick will give the iconic Doctor the Blagger's treatment. He'll be finding out the answers to questions such as why do Americans think Tom Baker is still the Doctor? How many Doctors have there really been? And were the Daleks really named after an encyclopaedia?
Finally, Graham Norton will be broadcasting his weekly Radio 2 show live (Saturday 23rd November, 10am) from the Doctor Who Celebration in London.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Countdown: The Eighth Doctor
The Eighth Doctor was an effortlessly charming, romantic figure. He was unguarded about his background and was equally candid about what the future held for people he came into contact with. It seems ironic that so much about this open Doctor remains a closed book.
When the Seventh Doctor was shot on the streets of San Francisco he didn't immediately regenerate. He was whisked away to a city hospital where - despite his pleas - he was operated on by Doctor Grace Holloway. After a dramatic operation, in which his alien physiology confused and complicated the procedure, she thought her attempts to save his life had failed. But later that night in a creepy morgue the Doctor began to change…
It would prove another tricky regeneration. "I was dead too long, this time," he told Grace. "The anaesthetic almost destroyed the regenerative process." Perhaps because of this complication, the new Doctor initially suffered from amnesia. He could remember things about Leonardo di Vinci and reminisced about Puccini, but he couldn't recall who he was. Most strikingly, he somehow knew extraordinary facts about people around him. As he was happy to share this knowledge it led to several poignant moments. "…it was a childish dream that made you a doctor. You dreamt you could hold back death," he reminded Grace, before adding, "Don't be sad… You'll do great things."
The Eighth Doctor soon regained his memory and unlike previous Doctors seemed at ease when discussing his childhood, bewitching his companion with stories of a youth spent on Gallifrey with his father. Indeed, he came across as being incredibly open about who he was and his entire background, chatting about everything from his two hearts to his home planet. He was also a more romantic figure than previous Doctors and kissed Grace as fireworks exploded on New Year's Eve.
Yet just like the Third Doctor he could be a man of action - zipping across the highways of California on a motorbike and using a fire hose to drop down the outside of a building! He also demonstrated a gift for sleight of hand, dexterously stealing a policeman's gun at one point and later removing the ID pass from a man he was chatting to, without him noticing!
Most of the Eighth Doctor's adventures remain a mystery to us. We saw him battle the Master and save the world in 1999 before bidding farewell to Grace. She questioned how she could find him again and he replied "I'm easy to find! I'm the guy with two hearts, remember?" Moments later, he was gone…

Thursday: Sunnydale's Number 1 Witch
Yes, it really is Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Just like last week, my sketch doesn't completely 100% look like Willow, but I think you can tell who it is.
I think all of her proportions are correct, although her hair is slightly too long. I think this sketch of Willow is a lot better than the one I did of Buffy, but the face still seems odd. Much like the other Buffy sketch, the left eye is too big and the pupil is out of proportion with the rest of the eye. I really need to work on that!
Sorry there aren't any face emotions again this week, I'll tell you the reason why tomorrow...

Wednesday: The Queen of Evil
I love Maleficent, she is my favourite female Disney villain. I've been dying to draw her ever since I started this drawing project. I didn't want to draw her yet as I wanted to wait until my drawing skills had improved slightly. But after hearing about the Maleficent movie that's currently in production from last weeks D23, I thought I can't wait anymore!
I think the proportions of the face and Maleficent's hat thing are correct, it's her facial features that let the sketch down. I love the way I've drawn her eyebrows, they look really evil. The eyes aren't too bad, but they could be better. And the nose is ok, although her nostril is a bit too high. I really need to learn to draw lips properly, because the lips ruin this sketch for me.

Tuesday: I've Shocked Myself
Today's animal sketch really surprised me, it can fool people into thinking I can actually draw. I don't like drawing things from books, because it makes me feel like I'm not really that good. But anyway what has become traditional in my sketches, I've managed to mess some of it up… again. This time it's the beak, it is slightly crooked and longer than it should be. But other than that I really like it!
Monday: Hoping It Will Get Better
It hasn't been a very good week for me. I've been really worried about university, mainly because I don't know if I can progress onto the second year of my animation course. I love my friends, my class and everything about uni, so I hate the fact that I might not be able to go back. I only need twenty points in order to continue. I re-submitted some work for two of my modules, but I still didn't have enough points. I don't know if any of my lecturers recieved my work and I won't find out till September. The only thing that's stopping me from going totally insane with worry is my drawing project.
Sadly I couldn't go to the life drawing class in Birmingham this week, so it was back to random images from Google.
This week's and last week's sketches haven't been too bad, to be honest. But the above images were kind of easy to draw, I need more of a challenge. So hopefully the life drawing class in Birmingham will be that challenge and I will get better!

Thursday: Everyone's favourite Slayer
I know you can't tell, but it really is Buffy! I've really wanted to draw something from Buffy's world for a while now, because Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off show Angel are two of my favourite shows of all time. I decided to start with the main slayer herself… Buffy. Her hair is a bit weird and her left eye is too big, but it does look a lot like Miss Summers if you see it from the corner of your eye!
There won't be any face emotions this week, but everything will be back to normal next week!

Wednesday: Back to Disney
After hearing the news about Disney's latest movie The Pirate Fairy from this year's D23, I decided to draw two of the stars from that movie. The first character I have chosen is Tinker Bell, she and her friends go to a mystical island and get their powers switched. The second character I've chosen is James, who you should recognise because he will one day become Captain Hook!
I'm really pleased with these sketches, apart from maybe Mickey or Goofy, I think Tinker Bell and Captain Hook are the best Disney drawings I've done since the dwarfs. My Tinker Bell sketch is pretty much perfect apart from the right eye, it looks like its been stretched and so doesn't match her other eye. My Captain Hook sketch is great too, but there are two things that just aren't right. The first thing is his arm that is stretched out, it might just be me but it looks weird and I should've drawn it better. Secondly the way I've drawn the bottom of his jacket makes it look like he's wearing a dress!

Tuesday: Overgrown Face
I enjoyed drawing a guinea pig, because to be honest it's quite easy. Although as usual I've managed to slightly mess it up. When I first started everything was going fine, because guinea pigs are basically big fluffy balls. It was great… until I added the face. The face is too big for its body, but for some reason the more I look at it, the more it grows on me. I kinda like it, but I think in future I should stay away from guinea pigs!
Monday: Slightly Better...
I'm quite pleased that my life drawing sketches are a bit better this week. The past couple of weeks have been stressful, I've to deal with stuff in my uni life and personal life, that's why I think my sketches have been really crappy. There are still major problems with these sketches (as usual): firstly the woman has a really long torso, weird boobs and don't get me started on the hands. Secondly the way I've drawn the next sketch, it looks like the Hunchback of Notre Dame posed for me.
Hopefully this will be the last time I'll have to use random images from Google. With any luck next week I should be going to a life drawing class in Birmingham, as suggested to me by my friend Reg (make sure you check out his blog, he's an awesome animator).

Friday: Lets Face It
At best I'm ok at drawing. Most of the sketches I do every week are copied from a book and I'm very good at it. But to be honest I'm meant to be able to just look at something - wether it's a person, an animal or a random object - and draw it, however as I have proved many times on a Monday I can't really draw freehand.
The emotions I went with this week were disgust, because I have really disliked a lot of the sketches I've done (I really need to cheer up). And hunger, I chose this basically because I was starving! I think I could have done a lot better with the young boy, to me it feels like it's lacking detail. I love the way I've drawn the old man (I know makes a change, right?), the left side of his face is great but I think the right eye is too high!

Thursday: Captain America Saves The Day… Kinda
As Thursday is super sci-fi day, I wanted to do a sketch that would kind of make up for the atrocity that was Thor and Loki, a couple of weeks ago. This time I decided to go with the main man of the Avengers, Captain America. With Thor and Loki I just drew them straight away, but this time I blocked out the sketch using different shapes to build the head and body.
Although it most definitely is not perfect, I know it's a lot better than my attempt at Thor and Loki. This is because I took my time building it up instead of going straight for the detail. There are a lot of things wrong with this like the head, shoulder, lips and torso, but ignoring that it's ok. But I know I can do better.

Wednesday: Alice, Why Can't I Draw You?
I'll tell you why I can't draw Alice… it's because she's a human being. I was able to draw three of the seven dwarfs and the evil queen (when she turns into an old hag). I think this was because they weren't so much carbon copies of a human, but more like caricatures. Alice is the first really human Disney character I've drawn, she looks quite good for my first go at a 'proper human'. Apart from a few issues with her face, arms and hands, I'm quite proud of it!
And here to prove my point is the white rabbit. As you can see its not perfect but you can clearly see who it is meant to be. Most of my Disney sketches have been quite good, so I'm glad that Alice and the white rabbit haven't come out so well, they remind me that I have a long way to go!

Tuesday: Why The Long, Deformed Face
I only had time to do one sketch, because I spent a long and stressful day at uni sorting out grades and student finance! When I first started this sketch I felt good about it. Using basic shapes to build the horse's head and then adding leaf shapes for the ears and nostrils, it was looking great. But then came the eyes. I think most my sketch is fine, it's just the eyes that make it look weird…
I think this is one of — if not the — worst sketches I've done. To me it looks like a cross between a mutated hamster and demon possessed horse. Hopefully the next animal I choose to draw will be better... fingers crossed!

Monday: Really Not Good
I'm getting worse! I really need to find a life drawing class, I feel like I'm slowly loosing my skills as an artist (not that I have many). If I do manage to find a life drawing class, I think I would really benefit from it. I just don't think my minuscule amount of talent will be able to survive till September.
So there you go, that was my depressing start to the week… it can only get better, right?

This Was A Very Short Week
Drawing wise I mean. I only managed to complete three days of my second drawing week, this was basically because life got in the way. But I am determined to stick to my plan next week.
Next week will be better, I promise!
In other news… Peter Capaldi is the 12th Doctor!

Friday: Faces!
I've never really been good with faces. Although I have slowly been improving my body drawing skills, when it comes to the face I always let myself down. I can never get the face to look realistic enough, whether I'm going for the cartoon or natural look. So that is why I have dedicated a day to just faces, here are my first four face sketches…
I've been working from the book Making Faces, it's an amazing book. It has lots of step-by-step guides on how to draw many different emotions. I only chose four and they were happy, angry, dread and dumbfounded. I'll be moving onto four different emotions next week, let me know which ones you'd like me to have a go at!
Tomorrow I should be sketching a storyboard, but I'll be in London for the day. So I'll be posting it on Sunday, see ya when I get back!

Thursday: Super Sci-Fi!
Ok, so I think yesterday was a fluke! I was amazed at how well I drew Disney, then you at today and its like what happened? After the success of yesterday's sketches I think I may have been a bit over confident going into today's task. So after drawing the first sketch and seeing, that it didn't really resemble Chris Hemsworth, I moved onto the next one. But by then nothing was really going right so I kinda gave up. Although now I know I should have stuck with it and given it another go.
I apologise for how disgustingly horrible Thor and Loki look. So tomorrow I'm just going to take a deep breathe and move on…

Wednesday: Its Disney Day!
Its day three and the day that I've been looking forward to the most. I am a massive Disney freak so I have been dyeing to draw something of Disney! Sadly I didn't have that much time so I only managed to do four sketches. I've decided to start with characters from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, because this is my first week of continuous drawing and that film is what started it all. I was quite surprised at how well I was able to draw these famous Disney characters, I thought they'd barely be recognisable. I think I'm finally starting to improve my drawing and it's exciting!
The book I used for these sketches is A Disney Sketchbook, it's a beautiful book, so it's a must buy for any Disney fan.
Tomorrow I'll be moving on to the world of sci-fi, so I'll see you then!

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Countdown: The Seventh Doctor
The Seventh Doctor was an inquisitive explorer, revelling in adventure and investigations into the unknown. He might trick you into thinking he was a buffoon, playing the fool or muddling his words - but these traits belied a sharp intelligence and a shrewd judge of character…
The Seventh Doctor was a complete contrast to the bombastic Sixth Doctor. He could be quiet and sweet and loved introducing people to new experiences, helping them find wonder in the slightest detail. "Nothing's just rubbish" he once told his companion, Mel, "If you have an inquiring mind!" Before landing the TARDIS he once crossed his fingers and declared, "I intend to explore!" like a schoolboy enthusing about a trip he couldn't wait to embark on… Such exuberance was typical of the Seventh Doctor's spirit of adventure. He would arrive in the middle of an apparently dangerous situation, declare, "I don't like the look of this!" before promptly into the unknown, simply to find out what was going on.
There was a melancholy side to this Doctor as well. When Mel declared she was leaving, he was reluctant to accept the fact at first, before coming round to her departure and finally saying, "Think about me when you're living your life one day after another, all in a neat pattern. Think about the homeless traveller and his old police box, with his days like crazy paving…"
His next companion was the teenage tearaway, Ace. The two became good friends and developed a great understanding of each other. The Time Lord knew when she was trying to get one over on him - "Ace, give me some of that Nitro-9 that you're not carrying!" - and she was aware she could gently tease him about his eccentricities. "You're just an ageing hippy, Professor," she once joked.
But a darker side to the Seventh Doctor emerged during his travels with Ace. He lured both the Daleks and the Cybermen into deadly traps, and plans he had set in motion centuries before came to a head in his dealings with the ancient evil Fenric. And it wasn't just his enemies who wound up as pawns in his games. He would often keep important details from his companion and some of his attempts to help her face and accept her past, although well-intentioned, put poor old Ace through the wringer. On one occasion he took her back to a house that held bad memories for her, but the 'confront-your-fears' exercise took a dangerous turn when it turned out the place was now housing a mad man, a Neanderthal, murderous husks and an alien bent on destroying humanity. Luckily, the Doctor was able to scupper its plans!
The Seventh Doctor finished up traveling alone and his end swift and brutal, shot down as he stepped out of the TARDIS in San Francisco in 1999. The ensuing regeneration brought to a close the days of a Doctor who played games with the universe, but never tired of its wonder: "There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream," he memorably mused. "People made of smoke, and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do!"

Tuesday: Failing to be Top Dog
So its day two and it's my first proper go at animals. I decided to start with dogs, because they are one of the more simple animals to draw. Sadly I don't have any pets so I based these sketches on images from books and the internet. I don't think I've done too bad for my first go. I mean I've messed up certain bit of each sketch (don't even mention the poodle!) like paws and giving one dog too much junk in it's trunk! They aren't too disastrous, so I am pleased.
That's my first stab at animals done for this week, I'll be moving onto cats next week. And I cant wait for tomorrow because it's Disney day!
Please don't forget to follow, comment and let me know where I'm going right or wrong, or any hints and tips you may have.
